Overview
The present invention discloses a method for developing a detection probe and kit for the pathogenic fungi Cryptococcus neoformans. Fluorescent core shell silica nanoparticles are used for developing the detection probe for the fungi. A hydrophobic dye is entrapped in the hydrophobic core of the nanoparticle. Surface modification of the nanoparticle imparts specificity for the detection of the pathogenic fungi. The positive charge of the shell is partially masked by a polyanion. Ligand specific for Cryptococcus cell surface antigen is covalently bonded to the surface of the nanoparticle using a coupling agent like Carboiimides. The fungal cells in the sample interact with the fluorescent nanoparticle and are detected using fluorescent microscope.
