Supporting 'Make in India', Amity scientists develop indigenous herbal colours

Noida, June 11 (ANI): Showing their support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative, Amityscientists have developed 100 percent pure, safe and indigenous herbal colours with absolutely no synthetic or harmful additives.
These herbal colours could be used in various industries such as cosmetics, toys, paints, pharmaceuticals, food and other items.
"The herbal colours indigenously developed at Amity, when used extensively in all the industries, will herald a revolution in the country, which is reeling under the pressure of products loaded with
synthetic components and chemicals," said Harsha Kharkwal, faculty at Amity University.
This technology has been transferred to a Jaipur-based company, Subh Laxmi Industries, for use of herbal colours in manufacturing of gulal.

Amity University is next to IITs in Terms of Filing Patents

With increasing number of Patents filed by researchers of Private educational institutions, the government-run institutions for higher education have now many competitors.
Although the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) jointly have keep hold of the number one position in terms of filing patents, Amity University, a private player, in Uttar Pradesh has climbed up to second position, which makes it ahead of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
When calculated jointly the IITs in the year 2012-2013 had filed 205 patents, while Amity University filed 140. In total when calculated, the top 10 Indian applicants in the category of institutes and universities filed some 534 patents. Out of 534 patents, 197 came from private institutions. Notably, the top 10 positions shared by 17 institutes and universities constituted six private institutes, in terms of filing the patents.
With the data, it was also revealed by the annual report of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Geographical Indications, Government of India for 2012-13 that there is a rising trend in the filing of intellectual property applications, as it was 36,812 in 2008-09 and increased to 43,674 in 2012-13. This also tells that there is a growth in research activities as well.
The report mentions that the first and second positions were unchanged for the second year running however, Amity had marked a record with 23% growth in filing patents, while only 2% marginal growth seen from IITs. Besides, Indian Institute of Science also had also grown by filing 31 patents as against 14 in 2011-12.

Private educational institutes climb in rankings

DELHI: Private educational institutions have finally emerged as competitors to government-run institutions of higher learning. While the Indian Institutes of Technology collectively retain the top slot in terms of filing patents, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh is ranked second, ahead of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
The IITs together filed 205 patents in 2012-13, Amity—a private player—filed 140. Altogether, 534 patents were filed by the top 10 Indian applicants in the category of institutes and universities, and of these, 197 were from private institutions. In fact, of the 17 institutes and universities that share the top 10 positions in terms of patents, six are private players.
Besides these findings, the annual report of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Geographical Indications, Government of India for 2012-13 shows an upward trend in the filing of intellectual property applications—from 36,812 in 2008-09 to 43,674 in 2012-13. Although there is significant gap between patents filed and granted, the institution-wise growth indicates increase in research activities as well. By Times of India
